Turner to Assure Equal Access to Affordable and Accessible Community Housing Background: For many years the fair housing complaints that are the most common are complaints made about disability discrimination in housing. Currently, according to the National Fair Housing Alliance… Across the country, civil rights are being stripped away. The administration just zeroed out all funding for the Fair Housing Initiatives Program, a vital program that funds nonprofit fair housing groups to address illegal housing discrimination, promote fair and affordable housing, and support neighborhood stability. The administration also terminated 78 critical grants used to fight housing discrimination, reversed course on prosecuting race discrimination cases involving Black and Latino people, and moved to erase rules that held governments accountable for segregation and discrimination. It has also banned federal diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility initiatives—and unfairly targeted transgender people. These are not just policy shifts. They are direct threats to the civil rights of millions of people. Therefore, ADAPT demands that Sec. Turner and HUD;Increase the stock of affordable, accessible, integrated housingReinstate and enforce strong Fair Housing and all non-discrimination protectionsFully implement and enforce the 21st Century Road to Housing Act.Collaborate with HHS to assure that there are housing options available for community living to serve people leaving or being diverted from institutional settings as provided in the SCOTUS decision in Olmstead |
